Here at Revolver, we're always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it's a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in hardcore, industrial-metal, sludge and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we've also compiled the songs in an ever-evolving Spotify playlist.
Avenged Sevenfold - "Game Over"
We love the batshit, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach of Avenged Sevenfold's new album, Life Is but a Dream…, but when it comes down to it, we're still just wanna rock. Which is why "Game Over" makes the cut here. It's probably the closest thing on the record to a straight-ahead A7X metal rager, and it still boasts left turns aplenty, nowhere more so than around the two-minute mark when M. Shadows downshifts into Mike Patton crooner mode over serene orchestral instrumentation. Fasten your seatbelt — it's going to be a bumpy ride.
Code Orange - "Grooming My Replacement"
We were strong supporters of the shifts Code Orange made on 2020's ambitious Underneath, which pulled in sounds from outside hardcore, experimented with looser song structures and ramped up their use of wild, noisy effects. Still, we're equally stoked to hear them go back to the bludgeoning metallic hardcore grooves that defined their 2017 album, Forever. "Grooming My Replacement," the better of two hugely heavy new singles, sees one of the most wrathful bands of the last decade doing what they do best: making us want to fucking destroy shit.
Buggin - "The Customer Is Always Wrong (TCIAW)"
Chicago's Buggin make the kind of hardcore that's as ferocious as it is fun to move to, and out of all the songs on their fantastic new album, Concrete Cowboys, "The Customer Is Always Wrong" best encapsulates their signature dynamic. Every line of this anti-Karen anthem makes you want to trash a cash register and throw a latte in some rich fucker's face, and the band provide the perfect soundtrack for loud-quitting in style. Bouncy, moshy and crunchy as hell, this is modern hardcore at its most vitally shit-stirring.
Bring Me the Horizon - "AmEN!" (Feat. Lil Uzi Vert, Daryl Palumbo)
Bring Me the Horizon have done songs with pop stars like Ed Sheeran, Halsey and Grimes, but the guest list on this new track still managed to make our jaws drop. Not only did they link with weirdo rap icon (and longtime metalhead) Lil Uzi Vert, but they got him on a track with Daryl Palumbo of motherfucking Glassjaw! Even if "AmEN!" feels a teensy bit jumbled by BMTH's own stellar standards, all these folks together on one song is a thrilling spectacle in and of itself.
Somnuri - "Death Is the Beginning"
A couple years back, we named Brooklyn's Somnuri an Artist You Need to Know for their refreshingly visceral take on sludge-metal. Their new song "Death Is the Beginning" proves they still deserve the title. Opening with a damn-near black-metal shriek, the track eventually settles into a Mastodon-style doom trudge before the double bass comes back in and everything goes haywire. Sludge that doesn't slouch. Hell yeah.
Godflesh - "Land Lord"
As its title suggests, Godflesh's forthcoming album Purge "revisits and updates the concepts" of the industrial-metal pioneers' 1992 opus, Pure — particularly that record's Nineties hip-hop grooves. Second single "Land Lord" epitomizes this, echoing the gritty, minimalist beats of classic J.K. Broadrick crushers like "Spite" and "Mothra," but with extra, new millennium punch.
