If you've seen the new Metalocalypse movie, Army of the Doomstar, then you know that Dethklok frontman Nathan Explosion is very much the hero of the film. And what a hero he is.
Many viewers have walked away enamored with Explosion — including radio host Full Metal Jackie, who recently interviewed Metalocalypse co-creator Brendon Small about the new movie, as well as Dethalbum IV and the band's big tour with Babymetal. Small shared plenty of insights across their conversation — including the fact that the Dethklok vocalist was not in fact inspired by Type O Negative bandleader Peter Steele, as popularly believed.
"Can we talk about Nathan Explosion," Jackie asked Small. "Is he not inspired by Peter Steele? Because I'm, like, in love with him."
"First of all, I've heard that a couple people say after this movie, 'I'm in love with Nathan Explosion,'" Small responded. "He really exposes himself and is vulnerable in this movie in a way that he hasn't [been before], we haven't let him be but because this is the big finale that's what happens.
Addressing the Type O question, he added: "It's funny. Peter Steele. I mean I think Type O Negative is great, but it was never really an idea. I think people kind of made that equation later on. But look, everyone loves Peter Steele and I know I think we're lucky to have any kind of equivalence to that. Though it wasn't the intention up top it started with Corpsegrinder really, with George Corpsegrinder Fisher from Cannibal Corpse, but I also think he's a beautiful romantic, as well."
Revolver is celebrating all of the above with a deluxe collector's issue dedicated to the Metalocalypse stars. The 100-page magazine features new in-depth interviews with series co-creator and musical mastermind Brendon Small, along with key collaborators, telling the full behind-the-scenes story of the animated band. It also features commentary from famous fans including King Diamond, Anthrax's Scott Ian and Cannibal Corpse's George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher. The issue comes in five collectible alternate covers, one of which was illustrated by artist Songgu Kwon just for this project.
