SeeYouSpaceCowboy are back and bolder than ever. It's been a couple years since the San Diego sasscore outfit released their eclectic post-hardcore opus, The Romance of Affliction, but today (August 24th) they've returned with a genre-blurring new song called "Chewing the Scenery."
In many ways, the song has a lot in common with the chuggy, skronky metalcore SYSC have been churning out since 2019's The Correlation Between Entrance and Exit Wounds, but all of their eccentricities are ramped up here. The emo-ish choruses are bigger, the waltzing intro is fascinating — but the breakdowns hit hard as hell.
"This is one of the first songs we wrote when we locked ourselves in a cabin in the Poconos to figure out what we wanted to do with the sound of SYSC moving forward," frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa said in a press release. "Somehow me saying I wanted a waltz part in a song turned into this expansion of the chaotic post-hardcore sound we had done on The Romance of Affliction, but with sprinkles of new 'brighter' elements we wanted to sprinkle into the new songs that we were making.
"This track served as a proof of concept for the beginning of playing around with whatever we wanted to and showed us that we can push without the confines of genre and style and still create something that sounded cohesive."
