Pick up classic albums from Sleep, High on Fire and other stoner-metal greats over at our shop
While they don't have a ton of material, Sleep are an imposing band to get into. Their songs are long — one of their albums, the infamous Dopemoker, is literally just one 63-minute track — and the droning, psychedelic nature of their music requires the listener to be in a certain headspace to fully get what they're going for. They're the quintessential stoner-metal band, but there're still plenty of people out there who've never taken their first rip of Sleep.
For them, Revolver is here to help with our "Point of Entry" series, in which we ask artists to pick the one standout cut from across their entire catalog that they believe is the best place for virgin listeners to begin their journey. Below, Sleep guitarist (and High on Fire frontman) Matt Pike does the honors. It's a tough choice.
"Holy Mountain"
I always thought "Dragonaut" was good. But, I don't know, nowadays I'd probably play "The Clarity" ... or "Holy Mountain" because the "Holy Mountain" tone, I'm still trying to get that back. I know the secret, but I still can't get the same recording. There's just something about that … that's like, Fuck. If you put on Dopesmoker, you might lose their interest … That's after you'd heard the band for a little bit and you're like, Oh OK, this is the masterpiece thing or whatnot.
