In addition to their iconic heavy metal and hard rock, Metallica have become known for their humanitarian work, particularly, the charitable efforts of the band's All Within My Hands foundation. In that vein, frontman James Hetfield recently took some time to visit injured Ukrainian soldiers receiving treatment at Vail Health Hospital in the singer's hometown of Vail, Colorado.
As reported by the local newspaper Vail Daily, Ukrainian serviceman Roman Denysiuk had been transported to the Vail Valley for surgery through an area nonprofit, Limbs for Liberty. The organization's co-founder, Kelli Rohrig, visited Denysiuk during his recovery, and one day she happened to run into Hetfield in the parking lot. After describing Denysiuk's situation to him, she asked the Metallica frontman if he could spare a moment to visit the soldier; Hetfield agreed and reportedly met with both Denysiuk and another Ukrainian patient, Igor Voinyi.
"It was unexpected," Voinyi told Vail Daily. "I didn't even believe it at the first moment that it was him. It was very short, but it was a very warm meeting. It would be nice to meet him at a campfire and have a drink, instead of the hospital."
"Metallica's songs are very popular in Ukraine," said Olga Milinan, the men's translator. "Growing up, we all listened to them and dreamed of seeing them."
Milinan added that, during the visit, Hetfield "wished the men luck and get better soon." Hetfield apparently appreciated the opportunity, reportedly leaving a note on Rohrig's car that read: "You made my day."
Metallica have been big supporters of Ukraine since the Russia's attack on the country, having donated half a millions dollars to World Central Kitchen through All Within My Hands to help feed Ukrainian refugees. Limbs For Liberty works with doctors and physical therapists to create prosthetics for Ukrainians who've lost limbs in war.
