It's been almost 40 years since Metallica released their thrash-metal masterpiece, Master of Puppets, and in that time, it doesn't appear that they've put any serious effort into perfecting the art of puppetry. On last night's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the showrunners decided they'd drive the metal titans to make up for lost time by having them learn how to use marionettes and then put on an actual puppet show for an audience of children.
The hilarious bit aired in the same episode when Metallica played their quintessential thrash epic, "Master of Puppets," in full, but it was even wilder to watch James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo tell an abbreviated version of Metallica's history through a real-life puppet performance. Ulrilch played a lonely cactus, Hetfield operated a "cool cat," Hammett personified a donkey that "likes to party," and Trujillo manned an Invisible Man who, as it turns out, "likes to party, too."
After some hijinks, Metallica's music starts blaring, the lights dim, and the puppets end up moshing with each other while the band destroys the set. It's pretty fucking great, and you can watch all the mischief go down above via YouTube.
Metallica's run on Kimmel will end tonight, and 72 Seasons finally drops tomorrow (April 14th) via the band's own Blackened Recordings. You can pre-order it here.
