The Smashing Pumpkins' Shiny and Oh So Bright reunion tour reached a star-studded crescendo last night (August 2nd) in Holmdel, New Jersey, which Billy Corgan and Co. graced with a special 30th anniversary performance. The celebratory one-off set saw the alt-rock icons welcome an array of special guests to share the stage, including Deftones' singer Chino Moreno, Corgan's ex Courtney Love, and Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook, whose son, Jack Bates, is handling low-end duties for the Pumpkins on the trek.
Moreno's cameo was particularly notable as he joined the band for rare performances of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' "Bodies," which was last played live in 2008, and Gish's "Snail," dusted off for the first time since 2000.
Later, Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath popped up for renditions of his band's Nineties smash "Fly" and, way better, Judas Priest's "Breaking the Law." Love sang two Corgan–co-written Hole songs, "Celebrity Skin" and "Malibou," as well as the Pumpkins' own "Bullet With Butterfly Wings." Finally, Hook guested on run-throughs of New Order's "Age of Consent" and "Transmission," the latter with AFI's Davey Havok jumping in on vocals, and helped close out the main set with a cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," assisted by Havok and Love.
