TOOL's long-awaited 2023 fall tour continued last night at the Aftershock festival in Sacramento, California. In the lead-up to the trek, the band's guitarist and visual guru Adam Jones had teased that the progressive metal visionaries might be breaking out some oldies on the run, and after thrilling fans at the tour opener by playing the 10,000 Days epic "Rosetta Stoned" for the first time with vocals since 2009, TOOL dug even deeper into their catalog at Aftershock, performing Undertow's "Swamp Song."
The group hadn't played that particular cut since a show three years ago in Brisbane, Australia, and they followed last night's performance of it with another oldie, "Ænema," the apocalyptic de facto title track off TOOL's masterful second album, 1996's Ænima, which had also been retired from the setlist since 2020.
