For those of us who like our metal with riffs, High on Fire are essential listening. The thrashy sludge outfit helmed by Matt Pike (who also plays guitar in stoner-metal pioneers Sleep) have released eight albums of material since forming in 1999, which makes for an imposing fortress of music to scale for someone who's never heard High on Fire before.
For them, Revolver is here to help with our "Point of Entry" series, in which we ask artists to pick the single standout cut from across their entire catalog that they believe is the best place for virgin listeners to begin their journey. Below, Pike does the honors.
"Fury Whip"
I guess the one that would stand out the most, that I would want someone to hear for the first time, definitely would be the song "Fury Whip," the opening song on [2007's] Death is This Communion. It encompasses almost everything High on Fire is aside from some of the more dirge-y shit we do. But that's High on Fire in a nutshell, that sound. That song hammers. I lucked out. It dropped out of the sky. It took us like an hour to write it. I was like, Dude that's fucking awesome. Wow. It's definitely a good opener.
